Welcome Back from the PTO

Happy First Day!

Despite the heat waves and dry lawns, we hope you had a wonderful summer and are excited about the start of our new school year at Nixon.

Your PTO is thrilled to introduce some improvements and “upgrades” to our school—all made possible by parents like you who have volunteered your time at fundraising events and helped us through last year’s Direct Appeal. Ask your kids about the new playground structure! And pretty soon, they’ll be telling you about our repaved blacktop with a brand new map and sets of foursquare, and our Core Value banners hanging in the cafeteria! You will also notice some new furniture in the weeks ahead, as we continue our efforts to help make Nixon a warm and comfortable environment for all of our children and their families.

While progress has been made this summer, your Nixon PTO is already gearing up for a busy 2016-2017 year, with a wide array of enrichment events, social activities, crafts, festivals, fairs and more. Our Enrichment Committee is already planning assemblies and field trips to complement the learning in every class and grade. The Curriculum Crafts Committee is already organizing creative and interactive ways to bring to life the subjects our teachers focus on each day. And our Social Committee is planning family-friendly after-school events to bring all of us together. And these are just three examples that represent the dozens of committees and nearly 150 volunteers who make it all happen!

Everything we do is centered around our PTO mission to Build Community and Make Memories—for our children, but also you! We know it can be tough to get back into the swing of things, so we’ve put together this note to help you navigate these early days of the year:

Stay Informed!

One of our goals is to ensure our parent community knows about the variety of PTO-sponsored events, programs and initiatives taking place at Nixon. Here’s how we do that:

  • The Gazette Website and Weekly Notices: The Nixon Gazette keeps you current on events and announcements, and provides links to lunch, recess and library schedules. Weekly Notices emails bring you the latest news, and are usually sent Wednesday evenings with corresponding articles online on the Gazette.
  • Email: We will send eblasts to about select events and activities to make sure you don’t miss them. Be sure your info is current for the Nixon Email & Directory Sign Up .
  • Facebook: Our private Facebook group is a great way to share information and foster connections within our community. Nixon Facebook Group Sign Up

Get Involved!

Everyone is welcome to join and we would love new families to jump in. We need your help in many areas big and small!

  • Volunteer for a Committee: Check out the Open Positions in our full list of current committee volunteers, and find detailed Committee Descriptions on the Nixon Gazette. A fun way to get involved!
  • Volunteer for an Event: It takes many volunteers to ensure the dozens of events the PTO sponsors each year are a success—Monster Mash alone requires over 100 volunteers! Stay tuned for calls to donate baked goods, help set up/clean up or man a station.
  • Volunteer During School: Volunteering for Lunch/Recess or Library duty is a great way to see your children in action at school. Here is the Lunch & Recess Schedule … and the Library Schedule
  • Come to the PTO Meetings – Our meetings, typically lasting no more than one hour, provide a great way to learn more about what’s going on at Nixon. Meetings are casual; stay as long or short as you like and younger siblings are welcome, too! Please check the PTO Meetings Calendar listed here to find a monthly meeting that fits your schedule.

We are so excited for this school year! Please join us in making memories and building a community for your child here at Nixon. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the Family Picnic September 9.

Hoping your first day is a great success!
