      Nixon’s Chess Club 2008-2009

 

Hi Everyone,

 

Chess Club remains a popular Monday/Friday morning activity at Nixon and many kids are really enjoying their time there.  We’d like to continue offering the club next year.  We will be participating as a Nixon school chess team in at least two statewide chess tournaments.   More detailed info on the exact dates/location will be available in the coming weeks.  First class is free for anyone to try!

 

Mondays:           Instructor led Chess Instruction to 1st-5th grades

                            Primary Goal for Class:  Improve your chess game and play competitively

                          Meets Every Monday at 7:45 – 8:45 am at Nixon elementary, Spanish Room.

                          Instructor Valery Frenklakh

                          Class size is limited to 14 (MAX)

                          Session 1: September 22nd 2008 through January 26th 2009

                                                     Total cost  for 15 classes - $200

                          Session2 : Feb 2nd  through May 18th (15 more classes)

                                                        Separate signups will be in Mid Jan 2009.

Monday classes would provide a strong instructional chess environment where kids would be able to improve their game significantly over the course of a session.  It will be led by Valery F. who is a nationally ranked chess grandmaster and a teacher.  He currently teaches many chess clubs at Haynes and Noyes Elem, Fen and Concord Public Schools.

 

 

Fridays:              Instructor led – Instructor supported Chess class K-5th grades

                            Primary Goal for Class:  Learn the basics and have fun playing chess.

                          Meets Every Friday between 7:45am - 8:45 am at Nixon Library.

Instructor – Lou Mercuire – Metrowest chess grand master, runs classes in shrewsbury, Acton, Maynard, Wayland and Natick

                                      Class size 24 max

                                      Session 1: from September 26th 2008 through Jan 30th 2009

                                        Total cost for 15 classes - $150

                        Session 2: Feb 6th through June 5th (15 more classes)

                                                   Separate signups will be in Mid Jan 2009

Friday classes would offer the kids a combination of a fun, relaxed playing environment (like they currently have) and some instruction every other week so they’re learning and applying what they learn.  The goal of this group would be to foster enthusiasm for the game while teaching them a little as well.
