Notes from the Literacy Center
Welcome to our new school year!
We would like to acknowledge all Nixon students who met the district reading goal of reading at least 6 books this summer with a special certificate.
Students who reached the Nixon summer reading challenge goal of completing the equivalent of at least 10 books this summer will also be awarded a homework pass. (Every 150 pages read will equal 1 book)
Please send your student’s reading list into the classroom teacher by the end of next week, Friday, September 12, for these reading awards. Anyone who borrowed books from the Literacy Center should return them to their classroom teacher by Friday, September 12.
As everyone settles into their new school routines, we strongly urge you to include a regular reading time at home. Since reading is a very active mental activity, is often best done sitting up with good lighting. Often children are very tired at bed time so that might be a good time for you to read to them or to share the reading. Independent reading or reading aloud to you might be best done earlier or even before school if you have some early risers. Many busy families find success when reading is part of a consistent daily routine.
Please look for further notes from the Literacy Center throughout the year. I am happy to talk with anyone with questions, concerns, ideas, etc. You can email me: kathy_zito@sudbury.k12.ma.us or call 978-443-1080 Ext. 4208.
I’m excited to be starting our second year with the new writing program and continuing to encourage our students to read like writers. More information about that to come. Here’s to everyone enjoying a good book!
