Dear Parents of Third, Fourth, and Fifth Graders:
During the next few weeks your child will be participating in a survey designed to gather information about teasing and bullying. The results of the survey will be used to help the district plan and develop programs that provide effective prevention and intervention activities in an effort to reduce teasing and bullying in our schools.
The survey will be administered during your child’s regularly scheduled computer lab period. Student participation in this survey is voluntary and each child’s response will be anonymous. After presenting a simple definition of bullying, the questionnaire asks a number of questions about various aspects of bullying, such as:
- number of students who report being bullied and the frequency of the occurrences;
- number of students who report witnessing incidents of bullying and teasing;
- forms of bullying that occur;
- locations in which bullying occurs;
- frequency with which teachers and parents have been made aware of the bullying;
- frequency with which teachers, peers, and parents have tried to stop the bullying.
The survey is one important component of the district’s Anti-Bullying Program. The comprehensive program design includes staff development, policy formation, curriculum development and implementation, committee work, and data collection as a means to strengthen and refine the overall program. The data gathered from this survey will provide valuable information to the committee members and school administrators as we assess the program activities and plan for future phases of the Anti-Bullying Program.
