Welcome to the Nixon School's 2006 Science Fair Website. This year's Science Fair - our 4 th Annual - will be held Wednesday, March 22 from 6:30-8:30 pm.
We are so proud that each year we have more and more students participating in the Science Fair. In 2005, a total of 232 students participated. Let’s do the math – 232 students out of a total of 500 students at Nixon. That’s 232/500 = .464 or 46.4%. Almost half! A really cool way to see this is with a pie chart.
Which grade had the most students enrolled? Check out the bar graph – you’ll see that it was the 1st graders who took the prize (with 3rd grade coming in a close second place). Congratulations to last year’s 1st graders, this year’s 2nd graders!
Now, some of you may be thinking in a scientific way and say to yourself , “yeah – but weren’t there more 1st graders last year than any other grade?”. You may be right – I need to remove that variable and normalize the data. Instead, I should calculate the percentage of students participating by grade. You do that math!
Perhaps you’re wondering about the boy/girl ratio. Well, I have to admit, there were more boy than girls. But not by much... 103 girls and 129 boys participated. That’s 44.4% girls, which of course means, 55.6% boys. Maybe there are just more boys at Nixon. Maybe its just an anomaly – we all know that girls make great scientists. Let’s show them girls!
Isn’t science fun?! That’s what the Science Fair is all about – FUN (the learning is a bonus!) Let’s make this year’s Science Fair the best ever. Get super creative. Have fun. Challenge yourself.
Anyway, down to business. You should be able to find everything you need (and so much more) on this website. A good place to start is by reading the ‘IMPORTANT INFORMATION’ then clicking on ‘REGISTRATION’. ‘PROJECT GUIDELINES’ will help you design your experiment and prepare your presentation for the Science Fair. If you need help, use a ‘LIFELINE’ – here you’ll find a list of super talented Scientists just waiting for your call or e-mail. Peruse the ‘PROJECT IDEAS’ or check out the ‘REFERENCE LINKS’ (with your parent’s permission) for tons of ideas. And, don’t forget to visit ‘SCIENCE TRIVIA’ for fun and interesting science facts.
Good Luck!
